Much like Anne Shirley, I *love* October. The changing leaves, the (eventually) crisper weather, the pumpkins, the spookiness…it makes me happy down to my witchy soul. I’ve been spending the last few weeks resting, recharging, and refilling my well; A Poisonous Silence is off to copyedits and I’m breathing a bit for the first time since I started drafting it last Thanksgiving. I’ve been reading a ton (more on that later) and trying to be extra-present for my family. I’m also working on a project for #FinishUrBookFall that at this point feels like it’s just for me – a cozy, gaslamp romantasy that in my head feels like a mashup of The Mummy and Laini Taylor’s Strange the Dreamer. I always find myself returning to my roots in fantasy in the autumn; something about that liminal space between the solstices makes me long for magic and wonder. It’s spooky season, after all!
Last week, I found out that A Poisonous Silence will release simultaneously in hardcover, e-book, and trade paperback. I’m super excited by this; I’ve long been worried about the price point of the hardcover (which is something out of my control entirely). I spent many, many years staring wistfully at $25-$30 hardcovers, knowing that they were just not in the budget, and though I’m an avid library user (and librarian myself!) there are some books that I just would love to keep forever. Hopefully, this change means it’ll find its way into the hands of more readers, and maybe we’ll have enough demand to see a third installment in Edie and Gil’s adventures together. (If you’re looking for another way to help? Leave a review! While I don’t actually read them for my own sanity, every single one helps boost Edie in the algorithm, and can lead to more readers in the long run. I’ll be forever grateful for you!)
As a reminder, I’ll be at Fall for the Book in Fairfax, VA on October 12, talking about Murder in the Jazz Age with Katharine Schellman. If you’re in Northern VA, I hope to see you there!
