It’s spooky season, witches ✨ monthly updates, pre-order campaign details, and more!
I have a confession to make: I am as obsessed with fall as every other 30-something white millennial mom on the internet. I love everything about it – the crisp mornings, the chunky sweaters, boots, cups of steaming chai, and all the spicy pumpkin and apple baked goods. I’ve always been drawn to the liminal, to the cusps, the spaces in between. There’s a sense of magic there, of possibility. Of almost.
I’ve been reflecting a lot lately on that feeling of liminal space. We are less than six months out from A DEADLY ENDEAVOR hitting shelves, but I turned in the final version almost two months ago. I’ve turned my attention elsewhere: to the beginning of another school year and the two other novels I’m drafting (more on that later). All that’s left to do now is wait – and hope that readers find their way to Edie and Gil. One way that you can help is to preorder – either through One More Page Books (signed copies) or from the retailer of your choice. It feels so strange – I am an author of a book most people cannot read yet. I say most people, because it is available for reviewers/booksellers/librarians to request via Netgalley and Edelweiss, and reviews are beginning to trickle in, though I’ve banned myself from reading them (it’s better this way, really). I’ve seen the PDF of the cover and the interior files, but I have yet to actually hold it in my hands. It’s this weird inbetween of almost and not quite yet and I find myself both really anxious about what could happen and so excited to see what’s going to happen.
Speaking of what’s GOING to happen – if you’re inclined to pre-order A DEADLY ENDEAVOR and you like thank you gifts, please fill out this google form to get a thank you note from me, a custom 2 inch sticker, and signed bookplate. Please make sure to include a photo or screenshot of your receipt or library request!
Here are the stickers:
If you’re ordering a signed copy from One More Page, don’t worry – your order automatically comes with all of the thank you gifts above, plus an exclusive art print (with a cocktail recipe on the back!).
What I’ve been…
Watching: Rez Dogs! We finished the last episode this week, and it was absolute perfection. I have loved every minute of this show, and I’m so satisfied with how it ended…and also so sad to say goodbye!
Reading: Lots of historical mysteries! I feel like I am making up for lost time – I’m an accidental mystery writer (A DEADLY ENDEAVOR was initially drafted as a historical fantasy, if you can believe it!!) and I’m trying to fill in the gaps in my own knowledge in these months before debut. It turns out not only do I love writing mysteries, I also really, really love reading them!! I’ve been tearing through Kate Belli’s Gilded Gotham series, and I’ve especially loved DEATH IN THE DETAILS by fellow 2024 Debut Katie Tietjen – it releases in April, and is available now to preorder. It follows a widow who uses her talent as a miniaturist to solve a murder in her small, postwar New England town. I also loved this article from Erin Bowman:
Listening to: Taylor Swift. My current WIP is an adult romance that can best be described as “Taylor Swift meets Practical Magic” and I have several songs – most specifically August, Marjorie, and Anti-Hero on repeat. And yes, these are absolutely clues about the plot of the book. 😉
Writing: See what I’m listening to! I’m currently drafting one book (and adult witchy romance), planning another historical mystery, and keeping another YA project on the back burner while I put my attention on the adult market for now. They are three VASTLY different projects, but I am starting to clearly identify my brand: women and girls who are braver than they know, swoony romance, and explorations of identity, complicated emotions, and belonging.
That’s really all I have for you. September in our house was a month of transition and change – my little one started Kindergarten (!!), my own school year started and I welcomed back my students into the library, and we said goodbye to our sweet dog, Zoey. We are awash in big feelings – of excitement and grief and sadness and love – and I’m hoping that October brings us stability and healing and joy.
Until November, friends.
Signing in for the 30 something white millenial fall-lovers club haha! October really is the best though. And I keep hearing about Rez Dogs. For being the huge Taika Waititi fan that I am, I really need to give it a shot.
Ahhh you really need to! It’s absolutely fantastic.
